Privacy
Retake Pro collects no data, and its only network connection of its own is the check for a new version. When a licence is bought, the payment is processed by Stripe and the name and email address given are kept so that a lost key can be re-issued.

Who is responsible
Mark Hammond is the data controller for this website and for purchases made through it. Contact: [email protected].
The software
Retake Pro has no account, no analytics, no crash reporting and no licence server. It does not collect, store or send personal data, usage data or diagnostics. Activating a licence does not involve any network connection.
The one network connection the app makes of its own is the check for a
new version. About once a day it reads a list of current versions from
the Retake releases site on GitHub Pages
(invertedworld.github.io). The request identifies the app
and its version, and carries no personal information. If a newer version
is available, it is downloaded from GitHub. GitHub sees your IP address
in the course of answering those requests, as any host does.
Everything you record or make with Retake Pro, including screen, camera and microphone recordings, narration, captions, projects and exported videos, is written to the folders you choose on your Mac and goes nowhere else unless you share it yourself.
Captions are transcribed from your narration on your Mac using Apple's on-device speech recognition. The first time, macOS may download its speech model from Apple; that download is a macOS service and is covered by Apple's privacy policy. Your audio is not sent anywhere.
Your licence is stored on your Mac, as the name and key you entered, in
~/Library/Application Support/Retake/license.txt, readable
only by your user account.
Permissions
Retake Pro asks macOS for Screen Recording access in order to record the screen, and for Microphone, Camera, Input Monitoring (for the keystroke overlay) and Speech Recognition (for captions) only when those features are turned on. Each can be changed at any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security.
This website
The site is static and is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. It runs no advertising and loads no third-party fonts. Cloudflare serves the site and, as any host does, processes connection data such as your IP address in order to deliver the page and protect against abuse. Cloudflare acts as a processor.
The only cookies the site sets are Google Analytics cookies, and only
if you accept them. Google Analytics counts visits and records which
pages are read, which site referred you, and your approximate location
and device type, so that we can see how the site is used. It runs only
after you click Accept in the cookie banner; until then
nothing is sent to Google and no cookie is set. It then sets the
_ga and _ga_* cookies, which last up to two
years. IP addresses are not stored by Google Analytics, advertising
features are off, and Google acts as a processor. You can withdraw
consent at any time from Cookie settings at the foot of
every page; declining deletes the cookies.
The download links on this site lead to files hosted on GitHub, which sees your IP address when serving them.
Buying a licence
When you buy a licence, the following is collected:
- The name the licence is issued to. It is bound into your key, which cannot exist without it. It is held in our records and in the key itself.
- Your email address. It is used to send you the key and to find your purchase if you write to us. It is passed to Stripe and Resend, and held in our records.
- Billing details that Stripe requests, such as your country. These are required to take a card payment and to check it against fraud rules. They are held by Stripe.
- Card details. These are used to take the payment and are held by Stripe only; they are never seen or held by us.
Who processes it
- Stripe takes the payment and is the record of the transaction. Stripe's privacy policy governs what it does with the data.
- Resend delivers the email carrying your licence key.
- Cloudflare runs the service that issues keys, and stores the purchase record.
How long it is kept
Your name, email address, the key issued and the date are kept for as long as the licence is valid. Because licences are perpetual, this means indefinitely. It is what allows a lost key to be re-issued without a second purchase.
Records of the sale itself are kept for six years, the period for which UK tax law requires business records to be retained. That obligation outlives a request to erase, so a deletion request removes everything discretionary but cannot remove the transaction record until that period has passed.
No marketing email is sent, and there is no mailing list.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you may:
- ask what is held about you, and obtain a copy;
- ask for it to be corrected, including the name on your licence, in which case a new key is issued;
- ask for it to be erased, subject to the six-year tax record described above;
- object to processing, or ask for it to be restricted.
Write to [email protected]. If you are unhappy with how a request has been handled, you may complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Lawful basis
Processing your purchase details is necessary to perform the contract between us. Keeping the sale record is necessary to comply with a legal obligation. Serving and protecting the website rests on a legitimate interest in its working and not being abused.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it. Material changes affecting existing customers will be notified by email.
